APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | OTHER PLATFORMS
Every podcast episode has a conversation happening inside of it.
And no, I’m not talking about the conversation you’re having out loud.
I’m talking about the one happening quietly in your listener’s head.
While you’re teaching, sharing stories, or explaining a concept, your listener is constantly asking themselves questions like:
- Does this apply to me?
- Does she really understand my problem?
- Could this actually work for my situation?
- Can she help me solve this?
They’re internalizing everything you’re saying and filtering it through their own experiences.
We all do this when we listen to podcasts.
You might even catch yourself thinking, “Okay, but how would this apply to me?” or “What exactly does this person offer?”
And whether you realize it or not, the structure of your podcast episode either moves that conversation forward or stops it completely.
What’s Really Happening When Someone Presses Play
When someone presses play on your podcast, they’re not just listening.
They’re evaluating.
They’re asking themselves questions like:
- Does she understand my specific problem?
- Is this advice relevant to my situation?
- Is this someone I could learn from?
- Could this person actually help me?
Every time you clearly explain a problem they recognize in themselves, something important happens.
They feel understood.
And feeling understood builds trust.
Why Trust Builds So Powerfully Through Podcasts
Trust builds when listeners hear:
- how you think
- how you explain things
- how you approach problems
- how you work with clients
Podcasting allows people to experience your expertise in a deeper way than almost any other platform.
That’s why podcast listeners often feel like they already know you before they ever reach out.
But here’s the important part many podcasters miss.
Trust alone does not create clients.
Trust must be paired with direction.
The Missing Step That Stops Listeners from Becoming Clients
If your episodes stay purely informational – filled with tips, facts, and helpful ideas – something critical never happens.
Your listeners learn.
But they don’t decide.
They walk away with useful information, but they never move closer to working with you.
This is where many podcasts unintentionally stall.
Listeners trust the host.
They enjoy the show.
But they have no idea what to do next.
So the invisible conversation in their mind simply ends.
The Natural Listener Journey
Podcast listeners usually move through three stages.
1. Discovery
They find your show and start listening. Sometimes they binge several episodes at once.
2. Trust
As they hear your voice, your thinking, and your perspective, trust begins to build.
3. Decision
Eventually they decide whether or not they want to work with you.
Your podcast plays the biggest role in that middle stage.
It’s where trust grows and where listeners evaluate whether you are the right person to help them.
But the decision only happens when you guide them.
Why Episode Structure Matters
If someone listens to five or ten episodes but never hears:
- how you help clients
- what working with you looks like
- what the next step should be
then the conversation in their head never finishes.
They trust you.
But they don’t know what to do with that trust.
And that’s where so many podcasts unintentionally stop converting listeners into clients.
The direction is missing.
The Role of Strategic Podcast Episodes
Your episodes should answer the questions your listeners are already asking themselves.
You don’t have to answer every question in every episode.
But your overall episode structure should move listeners toward clarity.
Clarity about:
- the problem they’re experiencing
- the solution they need
- how you help people solve it
- what step they should take next
When those pieces are present, the invisible conversation keeps moving forward.
And that’s when listeners begin deciding to work with you.
Where Most Podcasts Have a Leak
Many podcasters have great content but still aren’t seeing the results they expected.
Their episodes sound great.
They’re thoughtful and helpful.
But something in the system isn’t working.
I call these podcast leaks.
And once you know where the leak is, it becomes much easier to fix.
Next week we’re going to talk about something that happens to many podcasters.
Their episodes sound great. They’re thoughtful, helpful, and well produced.
But they still aren’t bringing in clients.
There are a few very specific reasons why that happens, and we’re going to break them down.
Until then, keep creating episodes that move your listener one step closer to becoming your client.
