Podcasting vs Social Media for Business [Ep. 51]

They’re Not the Same Tool

APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | OTHER PLATFORMS

If you’ve been treating podcasting and social media as two versions of the same thing, content platforms you pick between or use together, this . Most people in the online business space have landed here at some point. But understanding why podcasting vs social media for business is not an apples-to-apples comparison might be the thing that finally changes how you think about your entire marketing strategy.

They don’t do the same job. They were never designed to. And once you see that clearly, a lot of things start to make more sense.

What Social Media Was Built For

Social media is a discovery tool. That’s it. That’s the job it does well, and it does it very well. It just doesn’t always work in our favor. The algorithm is designed to surface content to people who don’t follow you yet, to push things into feeds, to create those moments where someone stumbles across a new account or idea or person they didn’t know existed five minutes ago. That’s what it was built for, along with entertainment, connection between people who already know each other, and keeping you scrolling as long as possible.

It was not built as a trust-building platform for service-based businesses. That came later, layered on top of things that were never designed around it. The ads, the business profiles, the “link in bio” workarounds, all of it was added on after the fact to a platform whose job is fast content and fast attention.

Which means when you sit down and spend an hour writing a caption, designing a graphic, filming a reel, crafting the hook, posting it, and responding to comments, and then it disappears in forty-eight hours without a single booked call, the platform is working exactly as it was designed to work. It was never trying to build trust for your business. That was never its job.

There’s a mismatch between what you’re asking the tool to do and what the tool was built for.

The Reason Social Media Feels So Hard

There’s something worth naming here, which is that the struggle with social media isn’t always about strategy or consistency or not having the right hook. Sometimes it’s just that the format doesn’t work for how your brain works.

You can have a great idea mid-episode, something that feels worth sharing, and then you sit down to turn it into a post and it becomes nothing. It’s not even close to what it was when you said it out loud. That experience is more common than people admit, and it makes sense, because some ideas live in conversation and voice and they don’t survive being compressed into a caption.

If you love social media, and your ideal clients are there, use it. Stick with it. But if you’ve been forcing yourself to show up on a platform that just doesn’t fit how you think or communicate, giving yourself permission to step back from it is not giving up. It might be the most strategic decision you make.

What Podcasting Was Built For

Podcasting is a trust-building tool. And the reason it builds trust differently than anything else comes down to one thing…chosen attention.

When someone listens to your podcast, they are not scrolling past you. They chose to press play. They’re on a walk or in the car or folding laundry, and they have put you in their ears for twenty, thirty, forty minutes. That kind of attention is not something social media can replicate, no matter how good your content is.

And over time, episode after episode, that attention compounds. Your listener starts to understand how you think. They hear your values and your stories and the way you explain things. They hear you talk about something you believe in, without a pitch, without a sales page, and somewhere in that listening, they start to decide. They decide that you are the person they want to work with. That decision happens in your podcast, not on your Instagram feed.

Social media might be where they found you. But your podcast is where they trust you. Those are different jobs, and they both matter, but they are not interchangeable.

Why the Foundation You Build Matters More Than You Think

Here’s where this distinction becomes especially important. If your podcast is the trust-building tool, and trust is what converts listeners into clients, then the foundation you build when you launch determines everything that follows.

A show launched with intention and strategy builds trust faster and keeps building it. A show thrown together without that foundation builds something too, but it’s usually not sustainable, and it’s often not pointing in the right direction. That’s where podcasts fade out because the structure underneath wasn’t there to hold it up.

The metaphor that keeps coming back is a house without a foundation. You can put up walls on bare ground, but they’re going to start falling, and eventually you stop putting them back up and let it all go. That’s what happens to most podcasts that quit, and it almost always traces back to a launch that skipped the strategic work.

There’s a version of advice out there that says just start, figure it out later, get some listeners and then worry about strategy. But the people saying that are often not the ones releasing episodes consistently, and they’re usually not running their podcast as a real business tool. Starting strong from the beginning is not the harder path. It’s actually what makes the whole thing easier to sustain.

The right listener finding your show on day one and immediately thinking this was made for me is worth more than a large audience of wrong listeners six months in. A strategically launched show attracts the right people from the start because it was built with that specific person in mind.

Stop Asking Social Media to Do the Job It Was Never Built For

Once you stop expecting social media to build the kind of trust that converts strangers into clients, and once you let your podcast carry that weight instead, things start to feel easier. You’re finally using each tool for what it’s good at.
