Unleash Your Authentic Self Through Podcasting [ep. 21]

Embracing Authenticity in Podcasting

In a world filled with noise, authenticity is our superpower.

Today we’re going to explore why being your genuine self is not just encouraged, but it’s essential when podcasting.

The Definition and Importance of Authenticity in Podcasting

I want to kick things off with just understanding what authenticity is.

I actually looked up the definition because I wanted to make sure that we all thought it was the same thing.

Authenticity is the quality of being genuine or real.

Now, in the context of podcasting, authenticity is about being real.

It’s about being genuine.

It’s about being true to yourself.

You want your audience to trust you.

It’s the unfiltered, the unedited version of you that resonates with your audience on a whole different level.

Now, when I say unedited, I don’t mean like editing the audio to sound great.

What I mean is just being yourself.

The Power of Being Vulnerable and True to Yourself

You want your audience to trust you. And the only way to do that is to be you.

When you bring your authentic self to your mic, it creates that connection that goes beyond just the surface. Your listeners aren’t just hearing your words. They’re feeling the authenticity behind them. They are learning who you are, how you talk, how you speak, the way you are.

You’re going to learn more and more about me…that I am goofy.

They want you. They want who you are. So don’t turn on your mic and try to be somebody you’re not. That is not going to get people to trust you.

If they see you being goofy on Instagram, be goofy on your podcast. If you’re very professional, be professional. You are who you are and your audience is going to love you for that.

Now let’s talk about being vulnerable because this is something that some people have difficulty with. I will say, I go back and forth. I can be completely vulnerable with some people and with others I hold back. But being vulnerable is that willingness to share your true self, even when it feels uncomfortable.

Vulnerability is that secret sauce that adds depth and richness to your podcasting journey.

When you open up and you share your challenges, you share your triumphs, the real, the messy parts of your life, your audience is going to connect with you just being human.

It’s about being relatable and creating that space where authenticity thrives.

Infusing Authenticity into Your Content and Building Trust

People connect with you when you are real.

I said in episode 20, I struggled with coming back, but now that I’m back, I’m just going to be me.

When you are creating your content, when you have this creation of what you want to say, you want to make sure that you are being authentic.

It’s not just about what you say. It’s how you say it. I tell this to my children all the time. It doesn’t matter what you say…it’s how you say it.

Your unique voice, your perspective, your personality, that should shine through in every episode. Be you.

We’ll explore on the podcast different ways to infuse this authenticity into your content and your storytelling. Because sharing personal anecdotes, being unapologetically you, this is where your podcast becomes a true reflection of who you are.

And I hope that as you listen to me, you get to learn who I really am.

It builds trust with your listeners. When you’re authentic you’re building a foundation of trust and rapport.

This was one of my biggest strengths when I was a teacher. My strength was my rapport with the students and even the parents. That’s why they loved me. I had that rapport with them. I was myself.

Your audience can sense when you are being genuine and that authenticity fosters that sense of trustworthiness.

You want your listeners to trust you and then in turn buy from you.

I mean, that’s our goal, right?

As your trust grows, so does your connection with your audience.

They become not just listeners, but loyal friends sharing in your journey and supporting you along the way.

I treat my clients as my friends. I truly believe in them as friends, and I hope that you can think of me as your podcast friend. Reach out to me so I know you’re listening.

The final point I want to make today with authenticity is just overcoming that fear of judgment. This is a big one for me. I think I’m talking to myself here.

It is natural to feel vulnerable when sharing your authentic self, to fear judgment and what people are thinking. It can be paralyzing.

But it is a hurdle worth overcoming. I am working on it and I want you to work on it with me.

I had to strip that fear away and just think, I don’t care what they think.

I’m just going to get behind the mic and be me.

Again, I’m not going to be for everybody.

That’s hard to think about, but I just have to be me.

Eventually I’ll have an episode about sharing some strategies on how to navigate and conquer this fear, empowering you to be confident and unapologetically you.

Your story, your voice, your journey, all of that matters.

And they deserve to be heard without the weight of judgment.

We have to learn to realize that there are people who need to hear what we have to say.

And those that are going to judge us, they’re not for us. They’re just not for us. And we have to learn that we are talking to those who need us.

All right, my friend, there you have it. The roadmap to unleashing your authentic self through podcasting.

I hope this inspires you to embrace your uniqueness, to share your story with the world.

Again, there are people out there who need to hear it.
