Are you finally ready to launch your podcast, but have no idea what you would say in your first episode? You’ve been dreaming about it for ages, and it’s been sitting on your to-do list, waiting for the perfect moment. But getting started can be daunting. What should you talk about in your very first podcast episode?
How do you capture your audience’s attention right from the get-go?
Well, you’re in luck! In my latest episode of Make Podcasting Simple, I’m walking you through the steps to planning your first episode. Grab your pen, paper, or open up a Google doc, and let’s outline that episode.
1. Welcome Your Listeners
Your podcast is for your listeners, even though it’s your creation. The first step is to make your audience feel welcomed.
- Greeting: Start with a warm welcome. Make your listeners feel seen and appreciated for pressing play. Let them know that you value their time and are excited to help them on their journey.
- Introduction: Briefly introduce the name and theme of your podcast. This helps to set the stage and gives your listeners an idea of what to expect.
2. Introduce Yourself
Your first episode is an excellent opportunity to let your audience get to know you.
- Who You Are: Share who you are, what you do, and who you serve. Be authentic and let your personality shine through. Are you a mom, a health coach, a social media manager? Let them know!
- Your Background: Give a little backstory about your professional and personal life. This helps build trust and connection with your audience.
3. Explain the Purpose of Your Podcast
What’s your podcast all about, and why should people listen to it?
- Purpose: Explain why you’re starting this podcast and what you hope to achieve.
- Upcoming Content: Give listeners a preview of the types of episodes they can expect. Will you have guest interviews? Will it be educational, entertaining, or both? Outline what they can look forward to.
4. How to Connect with You
Don’t forget to let your audience know how they can connect with you outside the podcast.
- Social Media and Website: Provide information on where listeners can find you on social media, your website, or any other platforms you’re active on.
- Freebies and Email List: If you have a freebie or an email list, now’s the time to mention it. It’s a great way to build your community and keep them engaged.
5. Call to Action
Encourage your listeners to take action after they’ve finished listening.
- Subscribe and Follow: Ask them to follow your show and to leave a review. Getting early reviews helps your podcast gain visibility on podcast platforms.
- Feedback: Encourage them to share what they’re most excited to hear about or ask them for topic suggestions. This not only promotes engagement but also gives you valuable insights into what your audience wants.
Remember, this first episode doesn’t have to be lengthy or overly elaborate. The goal is to break the ice and establish a connection with your audience. Aim for a short and sweet 10-minute introduction that leaves your listeners eager for more.
Next week, we’re going to dive into why launching with three episodes can be a game-changer and what you should include in episodes 2 and 3. Stay tuned!
I’m here to help you every step of the way on your podcasting journey!
