In episode 60 of Make Podcasting Simple, I talk about some things that can change the way you approach your podcasting journey. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned podcaster, streamlining your process can make a world of difference. Here are five simple podcast tools I’ve changed my mind about over the years, and how they can simplify your podcasting experience.
1. You Don’t Need the Most Expensive Mic
We’ve all heard it: “You need the best mic for the best audio.” While quality audio is crucial, it doesn’t mean you need to splurge on a $300 microphone. The Audio Technica ATR2100x, which is often available for around $49 on Amazon, can offer excellent audio quality. No need to spend more money that is not needed.
Although I do not recommend the Blue Yeti, for those of you who already own one, it can still serve you well. Just make sure you’re familiar with its settings and use it correctly. However, if simplicity is your goal, the ATR2100x is a plug-and-play solution that won’t disappoint.
2. Recording Platforms: Zoom is Just Fine
For a long time, I recommended specialized podcast software like Zencastr or Riverside for recording, especially guest episodes. However, I’ve had my share of technical hiccups with those platforms. That’s why I’ve shifted towards Zoom. It’s reliable, familiar, and when paired with good editing software like Auphonic, it can deliver excellent results.
Zoom also offers separate audio tracks for better editing control. If you’re already paying for Zoom, use it! Just don’t forget to hit record 😃.
3. Intros and Outros: Keep It Flexible
The conventional approach to podcasting often involves formal intros and outros. While these elements can add a polished touch to your episodes, they are not mandatory. If you prefer a more casual vibe, feel free to introduce yourself and your show at the beginning of each episode and wrap it up with a brief goodbye. Just remember: consistency and clarity are key.
4. Social Media: Let it Be a Tool
Some podcasting advice you might hear advocates that you do not need social media when you have a podcast. I believe that social media can complement your podcast. If you enjoy using platforms like Instagram, incorporate them into your podcast promotion strategy. Repurpose your podcast content to keep your social media feed vibrant without overloading yourself. Remember, it’s about finding a balance that works for you.
5. Chart Rankings: Focus on Content, Not Vanity Metrics
Making it to the top of the podcast charts can be an attractive goal, but don’t let it define your success. What truly matters is delivering valuable content that resonates with your audience and converts listeners into loyal fans. If your podcast makes it to the charts organically, that’s amazing!! But for most of us, concentrating on our core message and audience engagement will get you better long-term results.
In the end…
Podcasting doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. By prioritizing simplicity and functionality, you can create high-quality content that effectively communicates your message.
