APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | OTHER PLATFORMS
If you’re ready to use your podcast as a client‑generating engine (not just a hobby), you need to be aware of three podcast marketing mistakes that might be holding you back. In this post, you’ll discover three key errors many podcasters make and exactly how to course correct so your episodes start working harder for your business.
Mistake #1: Teaching Too Much (Closing the Curiosity Gap)
One of the most tempting traps is to over-deliver in every episode…walking listeners through full processes step by step until there’s nothing left unsaid. While your heart is in the right place (you want your audience to walk away feeling empowered), if your content leaves no “gap” or no unanswered question, they’ll rarely think, “I need help with this.”
Instead, aim to teach enough to be helpful, but not everything. Leave space for them to wonder how you’d apply those strategies in their unique situation. Let your content spark curiosity about how they could go deeper with your help.
You can still include mini‑action items – small fixes someone can do quickly on their own. But when you teach, stop short of full implementation. Make your episodes ignite interest, not satisfy every question.
Mistake #2: Aiming Your Content at the Wrong Audience
If your episodes speak only to experienced podcasters, fellow coaches, or people already “in your field,” you may miss your real ideal clients. It’s easy to default into insider language or high-level conversations – especially when you’ve been in your niche for a long time.
Ask yourself: who do I really serve? Who sits across from you in your ideal coaching, consulting, or service relationship? When recording, carry their face in your mind. Use examples, terms, and analogies they understand – not the ones experts would use.
That may mean dialing back assumptions, avoiding jargon, and remembering where your clients started (and what they didn’t know). Make every episode speak to them…not to people like you or people already ahead.
Mistake #3: Treating Calls to Action as an Afterthought (or Omitting Them)
This is the mistake that directly affects your conversion. You might deliver stellar content and then fumble the exit. If your call to action is a quick toss-in – “Oh, by the way, I have coaching” – it often fails to land because your listeners have mentally tuned out or rushed away.
Your call to action needs to feel like an extension of your teaching. It should flow naturally from the problem you just unpacked. It should connect the dots: here’s what we’ve discussed, here’s how I help you go deeper, and here’s exactly what your next step is.
Here’s what a strong CTA might sound like (woven in, not tacked on):
“If you’re realizing your time management is holding your business back, that’s exactly what I help clients overcome. Together we craft a plan that frees your time and still moves your goals forward. To explore whether you’re a fit for that, head to (yourdomain.com/offer) or click the link in this episode’s description.”
If you don’t have a current offer tied to that episode, at least drive toward your email list or a helpful freebie. Always point listeners somewhere with clarity.
Your Challenge This Week
Choose one past or upcoming episode. Ask yourself:
- Am I teaching so much that listeners feel no need to engage with me?
- Am I inadvertently speaking to people like me instead of my ideal client?
- Does the episode end with a clear, purposeful next step or does it fizzle?
Fixing just one of these can boost listener engagement, trust, and (over time) more leads or clients coming through your show. Try your adjustment for 30 to 90 days and monitor what changes in conversions and responses.
If you’d like help refining your episodes, calls to action, or your podcast strategy overall, I’d love to support you. Book a Podcast Power Hour with me and let’s map out how your show can truly serve your business. (Find the link in the episode or go to alisonniche.com/powerhour.)
